[Jenia] used to be my grandmother’s real name, because her German-speaking mother thought it was hip to give her kid a fresh Russian name. Then, when they had to flee to from what is now Russia towards Berlin, she was asked to change her name to a German one (now Jenny) so that they don’t attract too much attention.
I didn’t even know this until today.
