when I am talking to someone, and tell them about something to which they answer “that’s good to hear”, “I’m sure we’ll manage that” or the like, even though it is not at all suitable at that point and simply a hollow phrase.
Really, there is nothing worse than someone who does not listen to what you say, or just has standardized answers. As soon as I notice that, there will be no more voluntary talking with those people. Sickening!
Update: In an email, Jakob pointed out that U.S. English has cross-graded the term Bromide for the phrases (and people).
